Tomioka Silk Mill, National Historic Site in Tomioka, Japan.

The former silk reeling factory contains multiple brick structures including a main building, warehouses, dormitories, and a prominent industrial chimney.

Established in 1872 under the Meiji government, this factory introduced French silk production methods to modernize Japan's manufacturing capabilities.

The mill employed hundreds of women from former samurai families who worked in shifts and received education while contributing to national silk production.

Visitors can explore the preserved buildings through guided tours in Japanese, with audio guides available in multiple languages from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The factory maintained its original silk production equipment until 1987, making it one of the longest-operating traditional silk mills in Japan.
