Gunma Safari Park, Safari park in Tomioka, Japan
Gunma Safari Park is a safari park in Tomioka, Japan, that houses more than 100 animal species, including elephants, rhinos, lions, white tigers, and giraffes in spacious habitats. The facility spreads across several zones, with each area dedicated to different animal groups that move freely within their enclosures.
The facility opened its gates in 1979 and pursued a new approach to zoos in Japan where cars could drive through the areas. This shift allowed guests to see animals in a less confined environment than traditional enclosures permitted.
The facility takes its name from Gunma Prefecture and allows visitors to drive through the grounds themselves or join guided tours. Japanese families often use the place for weekend outings where children learn to observe animals up close without disturbing their natural environment.
Visitors reach the facility by taxi from Joshu-Tomioka Station or drive their own car, with parking available for 1500 vehicles. Plan enough time for the drive through the different zones, as the animals move at their own pace.
The facility offers special buses with protective grids alongside the car drive, allowing passengers to observe big cats at very close range. Some vehicles have windows without glass, so only the grid stands between guests and the animals.
