Umeda Arts Theater, Entertainment venue in Kita-ku, Japan
The Umeda Arts Theater is a performance building in Kita-ku, Osaka, comprising two halls: the Main Hall with 1905 seats and Theater Drama City with 898 seats. Both spaces sit within the Chayamachi complex and offer different stage sizes suited to various types of productions.
The theater opened in November 1992 as part of the new Chayamachi Applause complex in central Osaka. In 2005, it received its current name following a restructuring.
The theater is well known for hosting performances by the Takarazuka Revue, an all-female troupe that performs musicals with women playing both male and female roles. Many visitors come specifically to experience this distinctly Japanese form of musical theater that has maintained a devoted following for decades.
The easiest way to reach the theater is via Hankyu Umeda Station, a three-minute walk through the Chayamachi exit. Other nearby stations also provide access if you are willing to walk a bit longer.
The Main Hall uses special acoustic engineering so that sound remains equally clear in all rows and the stage feels closer than it actually is. This effect comes from carefully placed reflections and dampening built into the hall design.
