源光寺, Buddhist temple in Kita-ku, Japan
Genkouan is a Buddhist temple in Kita-ku composed of several building levels connected through different architectural styles. The complex includes pavilions, gardens, and a pond system that demonstrates traditional Japanese landscape design.
The temple originated from a villa purchased in 1397 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who later converted it into a religious site. After a fire in 1950 destroyed the main hall, it was completely rebuilt in 1955 combining modern techniques with traditional craftsmanship.
The temple is dedicated to Amida Buddha and holds an important place in Japan's zen Buddhist tradition. Visitors can experience the meditative character of the grounds through carefully designed gardens and still water features.
The grounds are easily accessible with marked pathways guiding visitors through the gardens and around all areas. Comfortable footwear is recommended as paths navigate uneven terrain and cross several bridges.
The gold decorations were completely renewed during reconstruction, giving the structure a modern gleam that differs from older temples. This renewal allowed traditional craftsmanship techniques to be combined with contemporary materials and methods.
