Umejima Station, railway station in Adachi, Tokyo, Japan
Umejima Station is an elevated stop on the Tobu Skytree Line, located in the Adachi district of Tokyo. The station has a central island platform flanked by local train tracks, with additional bypass tracks for express trains that do not stop here.
The station opened in 1924 as part of the Tobu Railway private network, one of the main private rail companies in the Tokyo area. It grew steadily alongside the residential neighborhood that developed around it over the following decades.
The name Umejima translates loosely to "plum island" in Japanese, a detail that hints at the older rural character of this part of Adachi. Passengers waiting on the platform can observe the mix of low-rise houses and small shops that line the streets below.
The station has ramps and elevators that make it easy to reach the platform regardless of mobility needs. Signage is posted in both Japanese and English, which helps visitors orient themselves without difficulty.
Although this is a quiet local stop, the station has four tracks instead of the usual two, a layout designed so that faster trains can overtake slower ones without disrupting the timetable. This kind of passing loop is far less common at smaller suburban stations than at major hubs.
