Akatsukayama Park, Botanical garden and park in Itabashi, Japan.
Akatsukayama Park is a botanical garden and public park in the Itabashi district of Tokyo, with sections for native plants, medicinal herbs, and sports facilities including baseball fields. Paths wind under mature zelkova trees and connect the different themed areas across the grounds.
The park opened in 1937 on part of a former Musashino woodland estate that was converted into a managed public space. This change was part of a broader effort across Japan to set aside natural land for city residents.
The Manyo Yakuyo Garden section displays medicinal plants mentioned in the Man'yoshu, a Japanese poetry collection from the 8th century. Walking through this part of the park, visitors can see plants that ancient Japanese poets once wrote about.
The park is open every day and easiest to reach on foot from Narimasu Station, just a short walk away. The paths are well kept and the trees provide shade throughout the day, so a visit works well in any season.
Although the park is known as a botanical garden, its grounds also include baseball fields that are actively used. This mix of sport and plant life in a single public space is unusual among Tokyo's city parks.
