Maruhoyama Kofun

Maruhoyama Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Sakai-ku, Japan.

Maruhoyama Kofun is an ancient burial mound shaped like a scallop shell in Sakai-ku. It sits within a moat and is part of the larger Mozu Tombs complex that contains many similar structures from the same era.

The mound was built in the 5th century as a burial site during a period when many such tombs were constructed in this region. Over several centuries, more than 100 of these megaliths were erected, showing how long this burial tradition lasted.

The mound reflects ancient Japanese burial practices that revealed social rankings of that time. Visitors today can see how the structure itself was shaped to honor those buried within.

The site has informational signs and viewing platforms that make it easy to understand the ancient structure. Visitors should allow time to walk around and view the mound from different angles to fully appreciate its construction.

This tomb is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans a vast area and brings together hundreds of ancient mounds. This large collection reveals important passages of early Japanese society through what archaeologists have uncovered from the ground.
