Izunuma, Wildlife refuge and Ramsar site in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan
Izunuma is a wetland sanctuary and Ramsar site consisting of several interconnected shallow lakes within the Hasama River alluvial plain. The terrain features open water bodies and marshy edges that support diverse waterfowl populations.
The government designated this location as a Natural Monument in 1967 to protect its diverse ecosystem and bird populations. This early recognition established legal protections that have remained in place ever since.
The calls of greater white-fronted geese were recorded here and included in Japan's official collection of natural sounds. These voices have become part of how locals and visitors experience the site during migration seasons.
The observation areas can be reached from a nearby train station with convenient access. Bring binoculars and weather-resistant clothing, as conditions can change quickly across these open wetlands.
A large portion of wild geese migrating to Japan choose this location as their wintering ground. This high concentration makes it the country's most important stopover for traveling birds.
