St. Matthew's Church is an Anglican church in Meigetsu-chō with architecture inspired by the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, blended with Japanese design elements. The building features a high nave with tall windows and was carefully designed to merge both architectural styles together.
The church was established in 1950 and became the cathedral of the Diocese of Chubu, following the groundwork laid by Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw in the early 1870s. This foundation marked a turning point for the Anglican community in Nagoya.
The church conducts bilingual programs through Lifehouse Kids, offering children aged 1-12 activities including songs, dancing, games, and Bible-based education.
The church is located two minutes from Hisaya Odori Station Exit 3A and is easily accessible by train. Access to the building is straightforward and the surroundings are conveniently placed near public transportation.
The church serves as the diocesan cathedral, a parish center, and also as a chapel for St. Mary's College, fulfilling multiple roles within the local community. This triple function makes it a significant gathering place for different religious and academic groups.
