Wakaura, Place of Scenic Beauty in Wakayama, Japan
Located along the southern coast of Wakayama City, Wakaura features coastal attractions scattered around its sheltered bay with traditional fishing ports and temples.
During the Edo period, Wakaura gained importance as part of the domain controlled by the Tokugawa family, leading to the construction of Kishu Toshogu Shrine.
The area contains multiple religious structures, including Tamatsushima Shrine, which became a significant site for poetry composition during the Heian period.
Three fishing ports in the area provide fresh seafood including spiny lobsters, sea breams, and abalones, available at local restaurants throughout the seasons.
The Horai Rock formation consists of two large stones connected by a narrow rock formation, creating a distinctive hole in the middle.
