Jōnoyama Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Tainai City, Japan
Jōnoyama Kofun is an ancient burial mound located in Tainai City within Niigata Prefecture. The site features an elliptical earthen mound that rises distinctly from the surrounding landscape.
The mound was built in the early 4th century as a burial site for a high-status individual. Artifacts discovered within indicate the wealth and importance of the person interred there.
The excavation revealed jade magatama, a Chinese bronze mirror, iron swords, and the first diamond-patterned quiver discovered north of Shiga Prefecture.
The burial mound sits in a rural area near Nakajo Station, making it accessible by taxi or car from the town center. The peaceful setting means there are few crowds, so visitors can explore the site at their own pace.
The burial mound ranks as the third largest in Niigata Prefecture and represents the northernmost kofun along the Sea of Japan from its period.
