Château d'Oi, Mountain fortress in Saku, Japan

Oi Castle is a mountain fortress in Saku composed of three separate sections divided by water moats. The steep cliff faces of the plateau served as natural barriers that strengthened the defensive capacity of the entire structure.

The fortress was founded during the Kamakura period by the Oi clan and became a major military stronghold in the region. It was destroyed by fire in 1484, marking the end of a long era of military control.

The site displays traditional Japanese fortification design, with natural cliffs and water channels integrated as defensive elements. How the structures were positioned within the landscape shows the skilled approach medieval architects took to working with terrain.

The central area has been converted into Ojo Park, offering well-maintained walking paths and safety fencing throughout. These facilities make the grounds accessible to visitors, particularly in areas with steep slopes.

The fortress served as a refuge for Ashikaga Shigeuchi, who sought shelter there during political conflicts. This episode reveals how its remote mountain location made it strategically valuable as a hiding place.
