Komoro Castle, Japanese castle in Komoro, Japan
Komoro Castle is a 15th-century fortress situated on a natural elevation of 321 meters, retaining original stone walls and gates from its early construction. The complex spans multiple buildings and museums distributed across the historical grounds.
The fortress was founded in 1487 by Ōi Mitsutada and underwent several renovations during the Azuchi-Momoyama period while serving as a strategic stronghold for successive rulers. The structure was expanded and modified over the centuries to meet changing military needs.
The castle grounds now function as a public park where visitors can explore museums and traditional structures that reflect how the site was once organized. In spring, cherry blossoms draw people who stroll through the grounds and gather in small groups beneath the trees.
The fortress sits just three minutes on foot from Komoro Station, making it easily accessible by train. Visitors should note that certain areas may close seasonally and weather can affect conditions on the grounds.
The passage through the Sannomon gate descends rather than ascends, which contrasts with most other Japanese castles where the approach typically climbs uphill. This unusual feature creates a surprising experience for visitors exploring the site.
