Shakusonji

Shakusonji, Buddhist temple in Komoro, Japan

This temple sits on steep cliffs overlooking the Chikuma River, with a main hall and an Avalokitesvara sanctuary built directly into the rock face. The structures blend with the natural stone formations, creating a site where architecture and landscape merge.

Founded in 724 by monk Gyoki, the temple was destroyed during a military campaign in the mid-16th century. It was reconstructed shortly after by the Mochizuki clan, who helped restore the site to its religious purpose.

This temple serves as the 29th station on the Shinano 33 Kannon Pilgrimage route that pilgrims have followed for centuries. Visitors can sense the spiritual significance of this stopping point along a path devoted to Avalokitesvara worship.

The walk from the parking area near the Chikuma River takes about 20 minutes and involves climbing stairs to reach the main buildings. Wear sturdy shoes, as the path is steep and can be slippery in places.

The site contains a cave called Zenkoji Ana that local tradition connects to a distant temple of the same name through an underground passage. According to the legend, smoke reportedly rose from this cave when a fire broke out at the distant temple.
