Osaragi Jiro Memorial Museum, Literary memorial museum in Harbor View Park, Yamatecho, Japan.
The Osaragi Jiro Memorial Museum is a literary and biographical museum in the Yamateche district of Yokohama, dedicated to the Japanese writer Osaragi Jiro. The red brick building with an arched roof holds several exhibition rooms where manuscripts, first edition books, and personal belongings of the author are on display.
The building was designed by architect Shizutaro Urabe and opened in 1978, shortly after the writer's death. It was established by the city of Yokohama, where Osaragi Jiro had lived for much of his life and which he often wrote about.
Osaragi Jiro was known for writing historical novels and adventure stories that were widely read across Japan during his lifetime. Visitors today can see the books, manuscripts, and objects he collected, which reflect the broad range of his interests.
The museum sits within a park area in Yamateche, which makes it easy to combine with a walk through the surrounding neighborhood. The exhibition rooms are not very large, so a visit of an hour or so is generally enough to see everything comfortably.
Osaragi Jiro was an avid collector of cat-related objects and images from around the world, and part of that collection is on display in the museum. This side of his personality surprises many visitors, as it stands in contrast to the serious tone of his historical novels.
