Osu Engeijo, Variety theater in Osu district, Nagoya, Japan.
Osu Engeijo is a variety theater in the Osu district of Nagoya, spreading 179 wooden seats across two floors. Both levels offer short distances to the stage, allowing every guest to follow the performers' facial expressions and gestures closely during each show.
The hall opened its doors in 1965 and now stands among the last permanent vaudeville houses in Nagoya. Support from the neighborhood has kept it running over the decades, even as many similar stages closed down across the city.
The building hosts Rakugo storytellers from the 1st to the 10th of each month, performing in Japanese with improvised gestures and vocal shifts. On the remaining days, magicians and comedians take the small stage, offering guests a rotating program of live entertainment that changes throughout the month.
Performances take place daily at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, with admission costing 2700 yen for adults and 2100 yen for children. Visitors should expect shows conducted in Japanese, as no translation is offered during the acts.
The operators run performances even when only one person sits in the hall. This approach shows the commitment of the performers to honor every guest and keep the tradition of live stage programs alive through each show.
