Ōtahime Inari-jinja

Ōtahime Inari-jinja, Shinto shrine in Japan

Ōtahime Inari-jinja is a small Shinto shrine in Chiyoda-ku nestled in a narrow alley away from crowded streets. The shrine features simple traditional wooden structures with bright red banners and lanterns hanging above the main building, creating a modest but well-kept appearance.

The shrine was founded in the mid-1400s when the warrior Dōkan built a nearby castle and promoted the worship of Inari. Over centuries, it was relocated several times due to fires and earthquakes, but was carefully restored each time by the local community.

The shrine is dedicated to Ukanomitama, a deity of agriculture and prosperity worshipped by workers and residents seeking good fortune. Visitors stop by to leave offerings and take moments of reflection, showing how this place is woven into the daily rhythm of local people.

The shrine is located in a narrow alley in Dōgenzaka and remains easily accessible despite nearby busy streets. Visitors should move slowly and respectfully, as it is a quiet place where people pause for brief visits or participate in ceremonies.

The shrine celebrates its annual festival on September 14 and 15 with many offerings and traditional decorations, when the community gathers to pray for good fortune and prosperity. The place holds special meaning for local people who see it as a protector of their neighborhood and recognize in its resilience through fires and earthquakes a symbol of lasting faith.
