Yamanashi Broadcasting and Press Centre, Media center in Kofu, Japan
The Yamanashi Broadcasting and Press Centre is a media building in Kofu featuring 16 large reinforced concrete columns, each five meters in diameter, that contain stairs and elevators. The lower levels house printing machinery, while the upper areas contain sealed broadcast studios and glass-walled offices with surrounding balconies.
The structure was completed in 1966 by architect Kenzo Tange and was designed to house a newspaper operation, radio station, and television studio. The design aimed to bring these three media operations together under one roof as a multifunctional center.
The structure displays open workspaces with large windows that make journalists and broadcast staff visible while they work. The glazing allows visitors to observe daily media operations from outside the building.
The location sits in central Kofu and is easily reached via the main streets. Visitors should note that some areas are active media workspaces and may have limited public access.
Architect Kenzo Tange originally planned buffer spaces between the different media departments to allow for future expansion. These reserve zones were later converted into green gardens and terraces where staff could take breaks.
