Kōfu City Fujimura Memorial Hall, Historic educational building in Kofu, Japan
The Kōfu City Fujimura Memorial Hall is a historic school building combining Japanese and Western architectural styles, visible in its dark gray shutters and wooden framework. The two-story structure holds multiple exhibition spaces displaying educational objects, school furnishings, and documents from different eras.
The building was constructed in 1875 during Japan's Meiji period, when the country was modernizing its education system with Western influences. It operated as a school for over 80 years before being transformed into a memorial to preserve this educational history.
The hall reflects how education shaped local life and shows what school was like for students in past generations. You can walk through rooms arranged as classrooms with period furnishings that reveal daily learning practices.
The hall is located near Kofu Station and is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding area. You can comfortably see all exhibition rooms in about an hour or two.
An original wooden staircase from the 19th century still runs through the building, showing craftsmanship techniques from that era. Visitors can stand on the observation balcony on the second floor and enjoy the same view that students had over a century ago.
