Kofu city Yuki park zoo, City zoo in Otamachi, Japan
Kofu City Yuki Park Zoo is an animal park in the Otamachi district of Kofu, in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. It houses animals such as flamingos, penguins, lions, and an elephant, spread across enclosures set within green areas.
The zoo opened on August 4, 1919, on land that had previously belonged to the Ichirenji Buddhist temple. Some of the original temple structures still stand at the edge of the grounds.
Every May, the grounds host the Shonoki Festival, where plant markets and traditional celebrations draw the local community together. Visitors who time their trip around this event will find a very different side of the park.
The zoo is easy to get around on foot, and most visitors can see it comfortably within a half day. A parking area is available on site for those arriving by car.
A canal runs through the grounds, making this one of the few zoos in Japan with a natural waterway passing through it. Children can also ride ponies and get close to farm animals in a separate area of the park.
