岩倉城, Mountain fortress in Kurayoshi, Japan
Iwakura Castle is a mountain fortress on Mount Iwakura at roughly 247 meters elevation with multiple wells and defensive earthworks spread across its grounds. The ruins display artificial terraces that likely served both habitation and defensive purposes.
The Ogamo clan built this fortress between 1182 and 1185 and held it as their main stronghold until abandoning it in 1600. Its end came during the upheaval following the Battle of Sekigahara, when local power structures collapsed.
The fortress served as a seat of local rulers who held administrative positions in Inaba Province. This role shaped how the regional elite saw themselves and their place in the wider world.
The site sits on a mountainous location and requires climbing to explore. Archaeological remains and earthwork patterns help guide you through the layout and show how the fortress was originally structured.
The fortress faced multiple sieges, notably from the Amako forces in 1569 and later by the Mōri clan in 1580 and 1582. These repeated attacks show how valuable the position was for controlling the region.
