小鳴門大橋, Rigid frame bridge at Lake Nakaumi, Japan.
Konan-Ohashi Bridge is a rigid frame bridge spanning Lake Nakaumi, connecting the city of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture with Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture. The structure stretches approximately 1.7 kilometers and accommodates both vehicle and pedestrian traffic across the lake.
The bridge was built between 1997 and 2004, replacing an older drawbridge that required frequent openings for ship passages. The new structure eliminated the need for such openings, significantly improving traffic flow across the lake.
The bridge became widely known in Japan through its distinctive shape when photographed from certain angles, gaining attention through social media and advertising. Many visitors come specifically to experience this visual effect and capture their own photographs.
The bridge features steep grades on both approaches, approximately 6 percent on the Shimane side and 5 percent on the Tottori side, making the crossing noticeable for drivers and walkers. Visitors should be prepared for these inclines, particularly if traveling in large vehicles or with mobility considerations.
Telescopes are installed along the bridge allowing visitors to observe Lake Nakaumi and Mount Daisen from approximately 45 meters above the water. These viewing instruments offer a practical way to explore the surrounding landscape during a crossing.
