Château de Yamana

Yamana Castle is a medieval fortress complex located on a mountain slope in Gunma Prefecture in eastern Japan. Its ruins display stone foundations, defensive walls, and structures spread across multiple levels that follow the natural terrain.

The fortress was founded in 1469 by a regional leader and quickly became central to medieval conflicts in the area. Rival warlords attacked it multiple times, making it a focal point of power struggles in eastern Japan.

Two ponds on the grounds, named Sun and Moon, once held symbolic meaning for local residents and connected the fortress to spiritual beliefs. These water features reveal how communities tied their daily surroundings to ritual and faith.

The site is accessible through walking paths that connect different archaeological remains and offer views of surrounding mountains. Visitors should expect uneven ground and steep sections, especially when exploring the upper areas of the site.

An ancient Zelkova tree grows near the Nitta shrine on the grounds and has connected the location to spiritual practices for centuries. This tree has witnessed the entire history of the fortress and remains a silent witness to the site.
