Jōei-ji, Buddhist temple in Miyanoshita, Yamaguchi, Japan

The temple features a stone garden with a central pond and dry waterfall, surrounded by dense forests on three sides of the property.

Founded in 1563 by Mōri Motonari to honor his deceased son Takamoto, the temple received recognition from Emperor Ogimachi after its establishment.

The rock garden, designed by monk and painter Sesshu Toyo, represents traditional Japanese garden principles through its stone arrangement and spatial composition.

Visitors can reach the temple via a 15-minute walk from Miyano Station or take a 10-minute drive from Yamaguchi Station on the JR West Line.

The garden preserves specific stone arrangement techniques from the Muromachi period, earning designations as both National Historic Site and National Place of Scenic Beauty.
