Iwafune Station, railway station in Tochigi, Tochigi prefecture, Japan
Iwafune Station is an above-ground stop on the Ryomo Line in Iwafunemachi Shizuka, a rural area in eastern Japan. The station has crossing tracks that allow trains to pass each other, and it operates without staff on site.
The station opened in the late 1800s, making it one of the older stops in the region. In 1987, it became part of JR East when Japan's national railway was privatized.
The station's name refers to the Iwafune rocks known in the local area. Standing on the platform, visitors get a clear sense of the rural setting that shapes everyday life in this part of Tochigi.
Because the station is unmanned, it helps to check train times before arriving and be ready to use ticket machines. The platform is open to the elements, so dressing for the weather makes the wait more comfortable.
The station was used as a filming location for the 2007 animated film 5 Centimeters per Second by Makoto Shinkai. Some visitors come specifically to recognize the scenes they know from the film.
