Guhō-ji

Guhō-ji is a Buddhist temple situated on a hillside with traditional wooden structures, stone lanterns, and cultivated gardens that shift with the seasons. The grounds contain prayer halls, subsidiary buildings, and pathways winding through tree-covered areas.

The temple was founded in 737 by Buddhist monk Gyōki and received its current name following a visit by Buddhist master Kūkai in 822. This renaming marked a significant phase in the site's spiritual development.

The site carries the story of Tekona, a local maiden whose legend shaped protective rituals for children and safe childbirth that endure today. Visitors can sense this connection through temple decorations and practices that remain active.

The temple is roughly 15 minutes on foot from JR Ichikawa Station and provides parking for visitors. Wear comfortable shoes, as the hillside paths are uneven and stairs appear throughout the grounds.

The temple grounds feature the Henran-tei tea room, which received its name during a visit by the historical figure Mito Kōmon in 1695. The space preserves traces of tea ceremony traditions tied to that encounter.
