Mizuwakasu Shrine, Shinto shrine in Okinoshima, Japan.

Mizuwakasu Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary in the Goka area of Dogo Island, distinguished by its thatched roof and traditional construction elements. The main building was erected in 1795 and displays a combination of three different architectural styles that characterize this historical site.

The sanctuary is documented in ancient texts such as Shoku Nihongi and received recognition as Myojin Taisha in 927. This early mention and classification demonstrate its long-standing importance as one of the most prominent religious centers in Oki.

The shrine holds the rank of highest-ranked sanctuary in Oki Province and draws visitors during its seasonal celebrations featuring traditional performances and rituals. Pilgrims and tourists gather to witness ceremonies that reflect the spiritual significance of this location for the local community.

Visitors reach the sanctuary by bus from Saigo port, traveling northward through the island. The overland journey requires advance planning and early departure, as the route takes considerable time.

The building deliberately combines three different architectural traditions: Yuiitsu Shinmei-zukuri at the front, Taisha-zukuri for the roof, and Kasuga-zukuri for the pent roof. This blend of distinct classical building styles is uncommon and reveals the innovative approach taken in designing this sanctuary.
