武藏野調車場, railway station in Japan
The Musashino marshaling yard was a large railway facility spanning Misato and Yoshikawa in Saitama Prefecture, built specifically for sorting and rearranging freight cars. The yard stretched approximately 5.2 km in length and could process over 4,400 freight cars daily through its many tracks and automated switching points.
The facility opened in 1974 as one of Japan's largest marshaling yards, equipped with cutting-edge automated systems using computers and cameras to manage freight cars. Operations ceased in 1984 and the site was eventually closed.
The site of the former yard is difficult to identify today as the land has been redeveloped with shopping centers and residential areas. Visitors can explore the nearby Yoshikawa-Minami Station, which opened in 2012, or walk through the modern commercial spaces now occupying the location.
The site now hosts large retail chains and modern shopping centers, including a major IKEA store and commercial spaces that show little trace of its former railway past. A few remnants of old tracks remain visible to those who look carefully, serving as quiet reminders of the yard's industrial heritage.
