浮島, River island in Numata, Japan
Ukishima is an island in the Katabanagawa River in Numata, sitting at 629 meters above sea level within the Tone River system in Gunma Prefecture. Two bridges connect the island to the mainland: the 120-meter Ukishima Bridge on the left bank and the 140-meter Fukiwari Bridge on the right bank.
The island houses the Kannondo Temple, which contains a Nyoirin Kannon statue that local records indicate was carved by master craftsman Hidari Jingoro. The temple and its sacred sculpture have shaped the spiritual significance of this location for centuries.
The site draws visitors who come to experience two annual ceremonies: the Ukishima Kannon Spring Festival in April and the Goma Fire Ritual in October. These festivals blend religious traditions with local customs that have been maintained across generations.
The island is best reached on foot via the two existing bridges, which offer good access points. Visitors should note that paths on the island are walked on foot and weather can affect the experience, particularly during rainy seasons.
The island sits near Fukiware Falls, where water flows around both sides of the elevated landmass in a special natural formation. This interplay of river and geology creates a rare landscape feature within the region.
