法恩寺, Buddhist temple in Ogose, Japan
Hoonji Temple is a Buddhist monastery set on forested grounds in Ogose, featuring wooden structures and a two-story pagoda. Stone pathways covered with moss connect the various buildings and monuments throughout the complex.
The temple was founded in 738 by the monk Gyoki and suffered damage during the Hogen and Heiji Rebellions. A prominent warlord oversaw its major reconstruction in 1190.
The temple serves as an active place where monks carry out their spiritual practices within the forested setting. Visitors can observe daily routines in the wooden structures, which gives the complex a lived-in and purposeful feel.
The temple is located in the Ogose area and welcomes visitors throughout the year. The pathways are natural and may become slippery in wet conditions, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
Two natural springs called Kinmeisui and Ginmeisui flow from ancient wells within the temple grounds. These water sources supply the entire complex and are often overlooked by visitors despite being central to how the site functions.
