Hōraku-ji, Buddhist temple in Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Japan
Hōraku-ji is a Buddhist temple in the Higashisumiyoshi-ku district of Osaka, Japan. The grounds bring together traditional wooden buildings arranged around a central courtyard, with maintained open areas between the individual structures.
The temple was founded in 1178 by Taira no Shigemori, making it one of the older Buddhist sites in the Osaka area. It went through several rebuildings over the centuries but continued to function as a place of religious practice without interruption.
The temple hosts regular prayer ceremonies and meditation gatherings where visitors can observe how Buddhist practices are woven into daily life. The spaces inside encourage contemplation and show how spiritual traditions continue to shape the community here.
The temple is easy to reach from several subway stations nearby and is open throughout the day. In some areas of the grounds, visitors may need to remove their shoes, so footwear that slips on and off easily is a good idea.
Hōraku-ji is one of 36 sacred sites in the Kinki Fudoson network, a pilgrimage circuit across the region dedicated to Fudo Myo-o, a central figure in Japanese Buddhism. Representations of this deity can be found on the grounds and are easy to miss if you are not looking for them.
