Hōdōji, Buddhist temple in Sakai, Japan.
The temple features a dining hall from the 12th century and a Tahoto tower that combines Japanese and Chinese architectural elements throughout its levels.
Emperor Tenji, the 38th Emperor of Japan, ordered the establishment of this temple after hearing about the Indian sage Hodo performing Buddhist rituals at this location.
The temple dining hall and Tahoto tower hold the status of Important Cultural Properties, while the kongo rikishi warrior statue remains a designated Cultural Property of Sakai.
Visitors can reach the temple by taking the Nankai Bus from Izumigaoka Station on the Semboku Rapid Railway to the Hachigamine bus stop.
The temple woodwork contains the earliest known engravings of killer whales, making it a significant record of marine life observation in Japanese architecture.
