Onsen-ji

Onsen-ji is a Buddhist temple with an integrated public bath facility housed within the main complex. Visitors can soak in wooden tubs filled with naturally heated spring water, combining religious visits with traditional Japanese bathing.

The temple was established in 788 but suffered severe damage from a typhoon in 1966, leading to complete reconstruction that finished in 1973. This rebuilding shaped the current form visitors see today.

The temple represents a blend of Buddhist worship and Japanese bathing customs that visitors can directly experience during their stay. Local pilgrims visit throughout the year to honor both spiritual practice and the healing properties of the hot spring water.

The temple sits in the highland area of Nikko and is accessible by bus from town, with a journey of around 80 minutes from the main station. Visitors should bring their own towels and wear layers, as the location can be quite cool even when the bath itself is warm.

The three gilded Buddha statues inside hold special meaning for pilgrims who connect them to the three sacred mountains surrounding the area. Many visitors return multiple times throughout the year to see how the statues appear under different seasons and lighting.
