Karasuyama Castle, Mountain fortress in Nasukarasuyama, Japan
The castle occupies a strategic position on Hakkosan mountain, stretching along a narrow hill with multiple fortified sections connected by dry moats at 100 meters elevation.
Nasu Sukeshige constructed the castle in 1418, establishing it as the primary residence of the Nasu clan until their removal from power in 1590.
The castle earned the name Gagyu-jo, meaning Lying Ox Castle, reflecting the Japanese tradition of associating natural landforms with animal shapes.
The castle grounds remain accessible through a 15-minute walk from Karasuyama Station, with stone walls and earthen ramparts visible throughout the public park.
The castle maintained its mountaintop position throughout the Edo Period, contrary to the common practice of relocating fortresses to lower, more accessible terrain.
