Saimyō-ji, Buddhist temple in Mashiko, Japan

The Saimyō-ji temple stands on a mountainside, featuring traditional Japanese architecture with a main hall for Buddhist ceremonies and rituals.

Founded in 737 and reconstructed in 1492, this temple remains one of the four most ancient religious structures in eastern Japan.

The temple holds a distinctive statue of Enma, the Buddhist Judge of Hell, depicted with an unusual laughing expression.

The temple functions as a stop along the Bandō Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage route, welcoming both religious practitioners and general visitors.

The temple grounds contain a rare collection of shikeidake, a Chinese bamboo variety characterized by four-sided stalks reaching heights of 30 feet.
