Mashiko, Pottery town in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan

Mashiko spans across 89 square kilometers of land with over 250 pottery workshops and 50 stores displaying ceramic crafts throughout the municipality.

The town's pottery tradition traces back to 1853 when local clay deposits were discovered and determined to be excellent for ceramic production.

The Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art houses collections of traditional and modern pottery works while supporting regular exhibitions by local artisans.

Visitors from Tokyo can reach Mashiko by taking the JR Utsunomiya Line to Oyama Station, followed by transfers on the Mito and Moka lines.

The town holds two major pottery festivals annually, during Golden Week in spring and early November, gathering ceramicists from across Japan.
