Kumanotaira Station is an abandoned railway stop nestled in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture. The site sits along a former rail line that scaled extremely steep mountain slopes using specialized rack-and-pinion technology.
The station opened in 1893 to serve mountain communities for over seven decades. After 1963, the line closed as newer electric locomotives made the rack-and-pinion system unnecessary.
