Bannosu Viaduct, Rigid-frame bridge in Chugoku Region, Japan
The Bannosu Viaduct is a two-lane road bridge spanning across Nakaumi Lake on tall supporting columns. It connects two prefectures and was built high enough to allow ships to pass underneath without obstruction.
The structure was completed in 2004 as a replacement for an older drawbridge that had severe traffic limitations. This new crossing greatly increased the flow of vehicles between the two prefectures.
The structure earned the local nickname "Roller Coaster Bridge" among residents of the surrounding prefectures because of how the road rises and falls sharply. The name reflects how drivers experience the drive across it on a daily basis.
Drivers should be aware of the sharp inclines when crossing, particularly during wet or windy weather conditions. It is advisable to reduce speed on the steepest sections for better control and safety.
This structure ranks among the largest rigid-frame bridges globally and represents a significant engineering achievement of its time. Its design and construction method make it noteworthy for how it handles the challenging terrain and water below.
