Sagamihara Park, Public park in Sagamihara, Japan
Sagamihara Park is a public park in the city of Sagamihara, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It has open lawns, a fountain plaza inspired by French garden design, a fenced dog run, and a greenhouse where tropical plants are kept year-round.
The park opened in 1979 and became widely known in 1992 when it hosted a major national horticultural exhibition. That event helped establish its reputation beyond the local area and brought lasting attention to its gardens.
The Minazuki Garden within the park is dedicated to Japanese iris flowers, which bloom in early summer and fill the area with shades of blue and purple. Visitors walk along narrow paths that pass directly between the plants, bringing them very close to the flowers.
The paths are wide and mostly flat, making it easy to move around even with a stroller or wheelchair. Signs throughout the grounds point toward the different areas, so it is easy to find spots like the greenhouse or the dog run.
The greenhouse inside the park carries the name of a private seed company that helped fund its creation, which is unusual for a public facility. Inside, plants that could not survive the local winters grow in conditions that keep them accessible to visitors all year.
