空堀商店街, Traditional shopping arcade in central Osaka, Japan
Karahori Shopping Street runs 800 meters from Matsuyamachi Street to Tanimachi Street with covered sections featuring different roof shapes: round, triangular, and square. The arcade blends various architectural styles and retail concepts throughout its length.
The neighborhood survived World War II bombings, preserving many original structures from the early Showa period and traditional merchant houses from the Meiji era. These buildings remain as witnesses to Osaka's older trading culture.
The street mixes older merchant residences with newly renovated spaces, where you can find local specialty shops, traditional sweet makers, and independent modern stores side by side.
You can reach the shopping street via Tanimachi 6-chome Station on the Osaka Metro, taking exit 3 and walking one minute north along Tanimachi Street. The flat terrain and covered sections make exploring comfortable regardless of weather.
The street has three distinct sections, each managed by different associations and marked by different roof designs. This layout reflects how the neighborhood developed over time in separate stages.
