Ryujin Dam, Concrete dam in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
Ryujin Dam is a concrete dam standing 45 meters tall in the mountainous landscape of eastern Ibaraki. The structure holds back the Ryujin River to create a large reservoir that shapes the area's scenery.
The dam was built during Japan's modernization period as an important water management structure for the Ibaraki region. The project helped develop the area's infrastructure for power generation and flood control.
The name Ryujin comes from local folklore about a dragon spirit living in the river, showing how Japanese mythology connects to natural features. Visitors can still sense this connection to local stories when looking at the water.
The site is accessible by bus from Hitachiota Station and offers parking for about 250 vehicles. There is a good viewpoint from above the dam where you can see the reservoir and surrounding landscape.
A suspension bridge spans the reservoir 100 meters above the water and serves as one of Japan's highest bungee jumping platforms. This thrill activity draws adventurous visitors from across the country.
