Maishima, Artificial island in Konohana-ku, Japan
Maishima is an artificial island in Konohana-ku created through land reclamation in Osaka Bay. It contains zones for sports facilities, educational institutions, recreational spaces, and health-related activities spread across its area.
The island was created from a land reclamation project that began in 1972, transforming Osaka Bay's surface. This project converted water into land to serve multiple public purposes.
The Maishima Arena accommodates 10,000 spectators for multiple sports events including baseball, volleyball, basketball, handball, badminton, and tennis competitions.
The island is accessible via JR Osaka Loop Line or JR Sakurajima Line, followed by local bus connections from the respective stations. The journey from central Osaka takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
The island features two industrial facilities with distinctive architecture that resemble illustrations from children's books. A waste incineration plant and a sludge treatment center create an unusual visual impression on the landscape.
