Yumemai Bridge, Floating rotating bridge in Konohana-ku, Japan.
The Yumemai Bridge is a rotating movable bridge in Konohana-ku that links two artificial islands with a steel structure spanning 940 meters. It has a width of about 34 meters and features pedestrian pathways alongside a rotating center section to allow larger vessels to pass.
The bridge opened in 2001 as part of Osaka's North Port development, connecting the artificial islands of Yumeshima and Maishima. This marked an important step in modernizing the harbor area's transportation network.
The name combines Japanese words for dream and dance, reflecting the link between Yumeshima and Maishima islands in Osaka Bay. Today it stands as a recognizable landmark that draws both locals and visitors.
The bridge allows both foot traffic and vehicle passage across the artificial islands. The rotating section activates when larger ships need to pass, so visitors may occasionally see the structure move.
This was the world's first floating rotating movable bridge system, engineered using innovative maritime construction techniques. The design required specialized mechanisms to allow ship passage while maintaining structural stability at different times.
