Konohana-ku, Administrative ward in Osaka, Japan
Konohana-ku is an administrative ward in Osaka, Japan, stretching along the mouth of the Yodo River where residential areas blend with industrial zones along the waterfront. The district is crossed by several railway lines that link residential and working areas, reaching out to the artificial islands in the bay.
The ward was established on April 1, 1925, when Osaka reorganized its administrative structure and grouped several coastal areas into a single district. Over the following decades the city transformed former wetlands and shoreline sections through land reclamation into residential and commercial zones.
The ward takes its name from its coastal character, describing the location where the river meets Osaka Bay. Today the district hosts ceramic exhibitions and sports facilities that locals use daily and where families gather on weekends.
The Sakurajima Line and Osaka Loop Line connect the ward to the city center, making it easier to reach the different neighborhoods. From here visitors also reach the islands in the bay where exhibition grounds and parks are located.
The artificial island Yumeshima within the ward will host the World Expo 2025 and is currently being transformed into a ground for international pavilions. Visitors can already observe the preparations along the waterfront promenades, where new bridges and access routes are taking shape.
