Yumeshima, Artificial island in Konohana-ku, Japan.
Yumeshima is a reclaimed island in Osaka Bay covering roughly 390 hectares, with container port facilities and large vacant development zones. The site sits within Konohana ward and connects to the mainland via the Yumemai Bridge and an underwater tunnel.
Licensing for landfill took place in 1977, but actual reclamation work did not start until 1991 using gravel from building sites. The island later became part of the Technoport Osaka scheme launched in 1988 for regional growth.
The name translates literally as Dream Island, reflecting the hopes attached to this reclaimed land. Visitors today see mostly port buildings and open plots awaiting future use.
Access to the island is by bridge or tunnel, both open to vehicle traffic. Visitors should note that much of the area consists of industrial zones and undeveloped sections.
World Expo 2025 will take place on this site, bringing international visitors for the first time in large numbers. Until then, the island remains largely empty and feels more like a building site than a finished district.
