若宮八幡宮

若宮八幡宮, Shinto shrine in Japan

Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Okazaki set within a quiet, tree-filled compound. The grounds hold memorial sites including a cenotaph for Nobuyasu, the eldest son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and a burial mound for his mother Tsuchiyama Gozen.

The shrine has deep roots in the Tokugawa family, particularly through Nobuyasu, who served as lord of Okazaki Castle in the 16th century and met a tragic end. Following his death, castle inhabitants reported strange occurrences that were believed to be his curse.

Locals have long visited this shrine for prayers and traditional festivals that mark its ties to the Tokugawa family. The site remains a spiritual center where community members gather to honor the past and participate in seasonal observances.

The grounds are freely accessible and open at no charge, with ample space for exploring and sitting quietly. The nearest bus stop is about 10 minutes walk away and free parking is available on site.

Unexplained phenomena were reported in the castle after Nobuyasu's death, interpreted as his presence lingering. These events led to veneration at this site, where visitors today can sense the tension between historical tragedy and spiritual respect.
