Tono Bridge

Tono Bridge, Arched bridge in Tono, Japan

Tono Bridge spans the Miyamori River with four connected arches that create a reflection pattern in the water below the structure. The bridge serves as a passage for both the Kamaishi Highway and the railway line, connecting communities across the area.

The bridge was built to connect communities in Iwate Prefecture and developed into an important transportation hub. Its significance grew when it became part of the romantic SL Ginga train route, creating connections to the region's literary heritage.

The bridge forms part of the route for the SL Ginga locomotive train, which draws inspiration from Kenji Miyazawa's novel Night on the Galactic Railroad. Visitors can experience this literary connection while walking through the landscape that once inspired the author's imagination.

The bridge is accessible by a short walk from Miyamori Station and lies near the Kamaishi Highway Route 283 for those traveling by car. A modern amphitheater nearby offers multiple viewing levels and platforms ideal for photography and enjoying the setting.

The bridge offers more than just a crossing, it serves as a scenic highlight for the nostalgic SL Ginga steam train rides that pass through the area. Experiencing the structure from the train itself, while traveling through landscapes tied to Miyazawa's literary world, creates a memorable perspective that ground-based visits alone cannot provide.
