Aratsu Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, Japan
Aratsu Bridge is a cable-stayed structure that spans 345 meters across Hakata Bay, carrying vehicles between Nanotsu and Minato districts. Two towers support a series of cables that hold the roadway above the water.
The bridge was completed in 1988 as part of Fukuoka's infrastructure expansion during a period of rapid urban growth. This new crossing reduced travel time and improved connectivity between the bay's two shorelines.
The bridge forms part of Fukuoka's working waterfront, showing how the city has integrated its connection to the bay into daily life.
The bridge carries regular bus traffic and can be crossed on foot, though pedestrian access may be limited in some sections. Views are best from the middle of the crossing during daylight hours, when weather conditions are clear.
From the bridge's midpoint, you can see Fukuoka's southern mountains on one side and an island-dotted bay on the other. This vantage point reveals how the city sits between mountains and open water.
