Kinugasayama Park, Urban park on Mount Kinugasa in Yokosuka, Japan
Kinugasayama Park is an urban park set on a wooded hillside in Yokosuka, a coastal city south of Tokyo, with walking trails, open lawns, and viewpoints overlooking the bay. The grounds are divided into several named zones, each with a different character, ranging from forested paths to open spaces with ponds and play areas.
The site was originally home to Kinugasa Castle, a fortification built in the 15th century that played a role in regional conflicts during the Sengoku period of Japanese history. The castle no longer stands, but earthworks and traces of the old defenses can still be seen within the park today.
Kinugasayama is one of the most visited spots in Yokosuka during cherry blossom season, when families and groups gather under the trees for hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying the blooms together. The park fills with picnic blankets and the mood is relaxed and festive during those few weeks each spring.
The park is within walking distance of several train stations in Yokosuka and requires no special planning to reach. Wear sturdy shoes, as many of the paths go uphill and the terrain can be uneven, especially in the forested sections.
The hill on which the park sits was used as a military observation post during the Russo-Japanese War in the early 20th century, thanks to its clear view over Tokyo Bay. Few visitors realize they are standing on ground that served both medieval and modern military purposes centuries apart.
