Sōgen-ji

Sōgen-ji is a Buddhist temple near Taura Station, with multiple wooden buildings showcasing traditional Japanese architecture set into a hillside location. The structures combine historical elements with functional spaces designed for religious practice and visitor experience.

The temple was founded in the 15th century and became established as a center for Zen practice in the region. Major damage from the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake required extensive rebuilding of its structures.

The temple sits roughly 10 minutes walk north of Taura Station, with red markers along the path to guide visitors. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful since the approach to the grounds involves climbing uphill.

The grounds hold numerous plum trees that produce colorful blossoms in early spring, creating a natural display against the temple structures. This seasonal bloom draws visitors each year who appreciate the blend of natural beauty and architectural forms.
